¹⁴ And Pharaoh’s slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed,^(A) demanding, “Why haven’t you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?”

³ but the judge must not impose more than forty lashes.^(A) If the guilty party is flogged more than that, your fellow Israelite will be degraded in your eyes.^(B)

⁹ “You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues.^(A) On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them.

⁴⁰ His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged.^(A) Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

³⁷ But Paul said to the officers: “They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens,^(A) and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out.”
